These sessions highlight Colin’s songwriting and collaboration with a talented team on both sides of the glass. Working with longtime friend and producer, Alan Sanderson, these two Scottish mates have created an album ranging from haunting to biting to supremely beautiful. Colin was fond of saying, “There are no accidents here,” and we’d have to agree. The planning and pre-production really showed AND allowed for spontaneity and exploration. Nailing down the essentials provided the time to let little explosions of sonic fortitude take shape and be exploited for the betterment of the final body of work.
Creating a sound for each song but maintaining an album consistency was important. There were little sonic signatures–subtle cues that made each song unique. We let the song blaze the path. We just followed where it took us, y’know.” – Alan Sanderson
The San Diego Wrecking Crew of Rick Nash on bass, Larry Grano on drums and percussion, Rick Schmidt on lap and pedal steel along with guitars and arrangement guidance from Rio de Janerio’ s Pedro Talerico made for a rhythm section second to none. Dave Curtis was also enlisted to add some keys and string sweetening which provided additional depth without sacrificing the immediacy of the cuts. Alan Sanderson offered his perspective on recording and mixing Endless Pageant. “Creating a sound for each song but maintaining an album consistency was important. There were little sonic signatures–subtle cues that made each song unique. We let the song blaze the path. We just followed where it took us, y’know,” he noted.
Finally, on backing vocals is the lovely Taylin Rae whose beautiful harmonies and energy added the perfect finishing touches to this impressive set of tunes. All this resulted in a collection of songs that span the gamut of infectiously rollicking in unbridled, upbeat fun; Dylanesque in biting observations on life’s contradictions to the sublimely sweet and even mystical in both word and atmosphere. And even in a room full of world-weary, hardened blokes some choked-back tears emerged as sheer, unfiltered beauty flowed from the control room monitors. These are sessions that will never be forgotten, aye.
